Hico TX, population 1,341, hosts the Old Settlers Reunion in late July. The Reunion has been held every year for the past 125 years. Festivities include a parade, carnival, dances, beauty pagent, live music, food, and crafts.

Hico was also home to Ollie P. Roberts, aka "Brushy Bill", whom many think to have been Billy the Kid, the infamous outlaw. Historians debate whether it is true or not and have ordered his grave in Hamilton TX to be exhumed. 

Hico was founded in 1856 by JR Alford, after hs hometown in Kentrucky, and was originally located on Honey Creek. Remnants of the original town have been found by Sherry Powers, former owner of the ranch on FM 1602 where the orginal Hico used to be. The "Blue Hole" is a deep swimming hole located on Honey Creek on the ranch. It was used as a public meeting place for the original Hico residents.

In 1880 the residents of Hico moved from the Honey Creek location to a location two and one half miles away, to be closer to the new railroad.

Hico suffered two fires in 1890. One destroyed the entire east side of Pecan Stree, then a few weeks later the west side burned down. Hico citizens rebuilt the town with larger buildings, which made the town even more magnificent.

Hico was a bustling town shortly after the turn of the century, buying and shipping more grain than all other towns combined on the Texas Central Railroad, along with 95 busineses, including a candy factory, six hotels, a broom factory, and ten grocery stores. Hico also boasted an Opera House, the Palace Theater and a roller rink for the entertainment of local residents.

The town of Hico, as with many small towns, suffered from the decline of the railroad industry. The town went from the hustle and bustle of cotton sales to a small community of farmers and ranchers.

Today Hico is experiencing new growth with a focus on the tourism industry. Many residents of Dallas/Forth Worth and Austin have chosen Hico as a great place to retire; being close to the city, but still in the country. Many former residents of Hico are also returning to retire.

In talking with a local resident, Quata Powers, whose parents played together on the streets of Hico and are buried at the local cemetary, you would know that Hico has changed alot. She and Sherry Powers, not related, share a special spot at the original Hico location, the Blue Hole. After moving to Hico from California, Sherry discovered that the Blue Hole was a popular place for baptism of local Hico residents. When her daughter married Quata Powers' son, they found that Quata had actually been baptized at the famous spot on the ranch formally owned by Bob and Sherry Powers. Was it coincidence or fate? Just one of the many interesting stories to be discovered in Hico Texas.
