Hamilton TX, population 2,977, was settled in 1855. Hamilton got its name from the South Carolina governer, James Hamilton. The limestone courthouse that still stands was built in 1887 to replace the previous two that burned. Indian attacks and the Civil War slowed the growth of Hamilton until the late 1890s. During the these times, two attempts were made to establish a new county seat, on Cowhouse Creek and on the banks of the Leon River, but both failed. By 1896 Hamilton had a grocery, two saloons, and three general stores. Three years later, a flood destroyed many of the homes in Hamilton and drowned one resident.
Railroad service did not begin until 1907-08, when the Stephenville, North and South Texas Railway was extended from Stephenville to Hamilton, but was discontinued in 1941-42. The St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas served the community for many years. At one time the town supported five cotton gins and, until Prohibition, a row of saloons along the north side of the town square. In 1954 a flood in the Pecan Creek valley caused a million dollars in damages to area businesses. Hamilton remains an important market center with banks and more than 100 businesses, including plants that manufacture clothes, wood and steel products, and dairy products.
Hamilton claims to be the dove hunting capital of Texas, and hosts the Annual Dove Festival at the late-summer opening of dove hunting season. People of neighboring towns flock to Hamilton for this event of food, music, crafts, rodeo, and the crowning of a Dove Festival queen.
Hamilton is a place where old men sit out on the square, just watching life and passing time. They smile and nod as you stroll by. The cashier at the grocery store asks "How are you?" with sincerity. If you want a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere, Hamilton is the place to be.
