Gatesville TX, population 15,591, was established in 1854 on donated land, and got its name from nearby Fort Gates. During this time Gatesville was very isolated. The nearest supply source was Houston, 200 miles away, and goods had to be brought in by wagon. Gatesville showed significant growth after the Civil War, when settlers were moving to start new lives.

In the 1880s, the residents bought their way into railroad service from the Texas and St. Louis Railway. It took $30,000 and a plot of land, but it was well worth it to bring new markets into the town. In 1972, the St. Louis and Southwestern of Texas abandoned its line between Lime City and Gatesville, leaving the town without railroad service.

Today Gatesville is home to a few correctional facilities, the most prominent being the Alfred D. Hughes Unit, a men's maximum security prison.
