Bellmead TX, population 9,214, began in the 1920s when locomotive shops were built there by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. 

The first school was named Bellmead, in honor of Belle Meade Farms, a horse farm in Tennessee.

The town began its rise in population in the 1940s when the Waco Army Air Field (renamed James Connally Air Force Base) was built just northeast of Bellmead. The facility closed in 1965, and Texas A&M established James Connally Technical Institute using the building.
