Aquilla, Tx, population 136, began drawing settlers in 1840, based on its proximity to Hillsboro, where timber for building could be found. The original settlement was called Mudtown, and the name was changed probably for one of its settlers, Aquilla Jones.
The town gained a post office in 1859, and the railroad arrived twenty years later.
Due to a series of illnesses from drinking spring water, a fresh water well was dug in 1897.
