Abbott, Tx, population 200, began in 1881 as a railroad town for the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railway. Abbott burned and was rebuilt three times, in 1897, 1903, and 1904. The town got electricity service in 1913 with the addition of an interurban railway by the Southern Traction Company.

Abbott suffered during the Great Depression, and the train stopped only when flagged. Czech settlers came to the area, bought most of the rich farmland, and have maintained a Catholic parish since the 1870s.

Many spelunkers come to Abbott to explore Hooker Cave on nearby Old Carr Ranch. Abbott is also the hometown of county music star, Willie Nelson.
